Yesterday was the final day to download the beta of Windows 7 — but if you’ve started you can still finish.

Microsoft has announced that yesterday was the final day to start downloading the beta of its new Windows 7 OS. However, anyone who’d begun the download prior to that date has until the 12th to finish, and those who’ve downloaded but haven’t yet obtained a product key will be able to obtain one past that date.

There’s no word on exactly how many people have downloaded the beta, but the demand was so high on the first weekend it was available that it brought servers to a halt, and Microsoft ended up extending the availability period for the download.

After the unpopularity of Vista, Microsoft desperately needs Windows 7 to be popular if it’s to keep its dominance. As of November, its market share had fallen below 90% for the first time, according to Information Week.

The procedure to remove Windows 7 depends on the computer system at hand. Was Windows 7 installed as another operating system in a multi-boot environment or as the only operating system? Is there data on the Windows 7 partition that needs to be backed up because it is still needed? The easiest solution to uninstall Windows 7 would be to simply erase the data on the partition and join that partition again with another one or directly install a new operating system on it. Here is a quick guide what you should consider when uninstalling Windows 7.

• Backup data: Make sure all important data has been backed up. This can be done by copying the data to another hard drive, removable device or by burning it to DVD.
• If Windows 7 is the only system it might be enough to simply format the hard drive and install a new operating system. It is always better to install a new operating system on a clean system.
• If Windows 7 is part of a multi-boot system it might be a good idea to format only that partition. The empty partition could then be joined with another one or used to install a new operating system on it.
• The boot loader on a multi-boot system will still list the Windows 7 system after removing it from the computer system. Windows XP users (or those with previous Windows operating systems) can simply edit the boot.ini file in the root of the hard drive and remove the Windows 7 entry. Windows Vista users on the other hand need to use a special editor like Easy BCD to remove the Windows 7 entry.
